Marathon Dog Wash fundraiser brings in over $2,000

The staff of Ellie's Pet Hotel and Bear River Animal Hospital combined efforts to raise over $2,000 to help victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita by hosting a Marathon Dog Wash and Bake Sale fundraiser.

"We are thrilled with the support we received from the community. People came from Brigham, and also Layton, Ogden and Logan. We groomed every breed of dog imaginable, from a tiny, 4-pound maltese to an English mastiff who weighed well over 100 pounds," said Phylene Anderson, owner of Ellie's Pet Hotel. "Most of the bake sale items sold-we had every kind of yummy treat. The grand total raised was $2,205.33; lots people were extra generous and donated more than the suggested amount for their dog's bath. We even had people contribute before the event started, and people who don't have pets stopped by and made donations."

Volunteer groomers included veterinarian Dr. LaMar Johnson, Tiffany Fawson, DeOnn Clark, Samantha Buhl, Laura Forsgren, Jill Bates, Paula Foit, Dorothy Egan, Mary Anderson, Chris Wilkerson, Teresa Sackett, Megan Sackett, Ashley Sackett, Michelle Sackett, Carson Anderson and Madison Anderson. Phylene Anderson cleared her schedule of regular grooming appointments to host the event at Ellie's Pet Hotel. German Shepherd Rescue of Utah donated two new dog crates for a raffle and another donor contributed a van barrier.

The Marathon Dog Wash lasted 12 hours on Saturday, October 15, and the hard-working groomers said they had fun while scrubbing their canine friends. Phylene Anderson's 7-year-old niece, Megan Sackett, put in as many volunteer hours as the adults did, and didn't mind smelling like a wet dog for a good cause. Only one person was needed to groom the giant but mild-mannered mastiff, but it took four stout-hearted volunteers to trim the toenails of a feisty, 4-pound miniature pinscher, Anderson said.

The money raised will be donated to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary's efforts to help the displaced animals affected by the recent hurricanes. Best Friends is working with local agencies to ease the emotional toll of the disasters by orchestrating happy reunions between human evacuees and the pets they were forced to leave behind. Other rescued animals are available for adoption.
